Issues

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. As someone who spends his days working to provide high-quality and affordable healthcare, I know it’s just as important to create policies at the state level that promote such. I will support proven policies backed by science and evidenced-based research such as Medicaid expansion. Also, as a two-time survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I am only here today thanks to the grace of God and being fortunate enough to have access to health insurance, excellent doctors, and great love and care given to me by my family. I know, through first hand experience, that life is fragile and not everyone gets so lucky. Creating healthcare policies that focus on equity, affordability, and accessibility will allow better outcomes for all of us and help other Tennesseans to not have to struggle with their healthcare decisions.

As someone who was provided a high-quality public education, I will support pro-education policies that fully fund education. We owe it to our children, no matter who they are or what demographic they come from, to have access to the best education system. I will support our teachers to ensure they have the resources, environment, and training to do their jobs effectively. Once elected, I plan to pursue: adequate funding for our public schools, expanded Pre-K, affordable college education, and the opportunity for our universities to offer STEM specialty magnet high schools throughout Tennessee. I oppose diverting badly needed resources from public school classrooms to fund school voucher schemes.

Tennessee, and Nashville in particular, has a booming, diverse economy. The challenge lies in ensuring our economic growth continues while making it work for everyone. As someone who has a successful track record of job creation while working for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, I know how to promote policies like targeted business incentives and worker job training to ensure a business-friendly climate that will create the high-paying 21st century jobs that will drive the economy and ensure everyone benefits.

In a time where our fundamental rights are under attack by Tennessee’s legislature, I will:

  • protect and defend women’s right to make their own healthcare decisions, including those related to reproductive health;
  • protect and defend the right of all Tennesseans to marry the person they love; and
  • protect access to voting in free and fair elections.

The people of Tennessee are feeling the effects of higher costs in their everyday lives at the gas pump and grocery checkout lines. In Nashville, we are witnessing high demand and low supply of affordable housing take a toll on the financial stability of local families. There are common-sense policies we can enact in the legislature to combat the rising cost of living to ensure working class families are given a fair chance. As a state representative, I will fight to ensure sensible policies to help address inflation and holding corporate greed accountable for price gouging in our state.

Caleb is committed to protecting the safety of our loved ones, friends, and neighbors. There are many practical approaches to community safety that would have a major impact in our city and state. There remains a massive backlog of untested rape kits, which contain the identities of violent criminals still walking our streets. In the State House, Caleb will fully fund and support TBI crime labs and promote a sharp focus on bringing criminals to justice.

In addition, Caleb will:

  • support enhanced background checks to keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and those with mental illnesses;
  • push for additional funding for our police departments to better address and prevent incidents related to mental health issues; and
  • support paying our police officers well so we can recruit and retain the very best, and ensure they have the tools they need to keep our community safe.
