August Newsletter – Rep. Caleb Hemmer

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. As someone who spends his days working to provide high-quality and affordable healthcare, I know it’s just as important to create policies at the state level that promote such. I will support proven policies backed by science and evidenced-based research such as Medicaid expansion. Also, as a two-time survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I am only here today thanks to the grace of God and being fortunate enough to have access to health insurance, excellent doctors, and great love and care given to me by my family. I know, through first hand experience, that life is fragile and not everyone gets so lucky. Creating healthcare policies that focus on equity, affordability, and accessibility will allow better outcomes for all of us and help other Tennesseans to not have to struggle with their healthcare decisions.
Caleb is committed to protecting the safety of our loved ones, friends, and neighbors. There are many practical approaches to community safety that would have a major impact in our city and state.
As an outdoorsman, Caleb understands the importance of Second Amendment rights. As a father and school shooting survivor, Caleb knows that now is the moment to pass common-sense gun reform policies in our state.
In the State House, Caleb works to fully fund and support public safety and brings a sharp focus to bringing criminals to justice.
In addition, Caleb:
- fights to pass safe storage laws that address Tennessee’s vehicle gun theft epidemic;
- supports enhanced background checks to keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and those with mental illnesses;
- pushes for additional funding for our police departments to better address and prevent incidents related to mental health issues; and
- supports paying our police officers well so we can recruit and retain the very best, and ensure they have the tools they need to keep our community safe.
In a time where our fundamental rights are under attack by Tennessee’s legislature, Caleb fights to:
- protect and defend women’s right to make their own healthcare decisions, including those related to reproductive health;
- protect and defend the right of all Tennesseans to marry the person they love; and
- protect access to voting in free and fair elections.
There is a major affordable housing crisis in Tennessee, but Caleb works to make progress at the state level through innovative approaches. This year, he made significant strides with state policymakers in emphasizing that the state has a crucial role in developing solutions and supporting local governments.
To advance these efforts, Caleb introduced HB1229, which designates affordable housing as a public purpose. This legislation enables local governments to approve plans for their industrial development boards to issue bonds for affordable housing projects.
Communities across Tennessee utilize these new tools to address affordable housing shortages.
As someone who was provided a high-quality public education, Caleb supports pro-education policies that fully fund education. We owe it to our children, no matter who they are or what demographic they come from, to have access to the best education system. He works to support our teachers to ensure they have the resources, environment, and training to do their jobs effectively.
Caleb’s policy work includes adequate funding for our public schools, expanded Pre-K, affordable college education, and free school meals throughout Tennessee.
Additionally, he has passed legislation to expand university partnerships with local public schools to create innovative lab schools.
He opposes diverting badly needed resources from public school classrooms to fund school voucher schemes.
